3rd-That in the course of that Service he has been absent on leave on several
occasions, at the dates and for the terms specified below, viz:-

1st.-For 26 Months beginning on the 7 July 1871 and ending on the 13th February 1873.
2nd.-For 16 months, from the 1st August 1882 to 3rd December, 1883
Part of this leave was spent in Hongkong learning Chinese.
4th. That provision has been made for the execution of his duty during his absence.
That this leave is granted under Sections I and II of the Police Regulations printed on page 3.
6th.-Under Section II he is entitled to a return passage, 2nd class per Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company's Mail Steamer, at the cost of the Colony, subject to his passing a satisfactory medical Examination about 3 months before the expiration of his leave as to his fitness to return to a tropical climate.
He is also entitled to 2nd class free passages as above for his wife and family not exceeding four in number (C.O. Desp. 47)
EXTRACTS FROM LEAVE REGULATIONS OF HONGKONG POLICE FORCE.
Regulations made by the Governor on the 26th day of September, 1881, relating to leave of absence and pensions to Members of the Police Force of Hongkong, under Ordinance 9 of 1862.
EUROPEANS.
Leave at the expiration of Five Years' Service.
1. Any European Member of the Police Force may, after five years' service, on claiming his return passage, or gratuity of three months' pay, or pension, as the case may be, under § III of Ordinance 8 of 1869, apply through the Captain Superintendent of Police to His Excellency the Governor for permission to return to the service within a period not exceeding nine months.
II. Should this application be approved, the Applicant will receive half pay, during his absence, and a certificate entitling him to a return passage to the Colony within the period specified.
III. The Applicant shall enter into a bond for the refund of the half pay, or the difference between his pension and half pay as the case may be, drawn after his leaving the Colony, in case he does not return at the period specified.
IV. This period may nevertheless be extended by the Secretary of State for the Colonies, on such ground as may to him be satisfactory, and such extension shall be deemed to be leave originally granted within the meaning of the above Sections I, II, and III, anything therein contained to the contrary notwithstanding.
V. Such leave shall enable the Applicant to count his previous service as regards the time of service required before a pension is granted, but shall not be calculated as actual service towards obtaining a pension.
VI. On the Applicant's return to the Colony, he shall be reinstated in his relative position in the Force, and he will be sworn in for a further period of five years' service under § IX of Ordinances 9 of 1862, and 8 of 1869.
